About the Author
Abe Shenitzer was born in Warsaw in 1921. He received his Ph.D. degree from New York University in 1954. He has taught at York University since 1969. He is the translator of Russian and German books and articles., and has served as the translator of two MAA books published in the Dolciani Mathematical Exposition series: Diophantus and Diophantine Equations, by Isabella Bashmakova, and The Beginnings and Evolution of Algebra by Isabella Bashmakova and Galina Smirnova. His abiding ambition is to present mathematics so that is seen to be what it is––an art.
John Stillwell was born in Melbourne Australia, and received his Ph.D. from MIT in 1970. He has taught at Monash University in Melbourne since 1970.. He has given sever invited addresses at conferences including the International Congress of Mathematicians in 1994, and the Joint Meetings of the MAA and AMS in 1998. His previous books are: Classical Topology and Combinatorial Group Theory, Mathematics and its History, Elements of Algebra, Numbers and Geometry, and Geometry of Surfaces.
